How the day goes

The tilak and lunch take up the first half of the day. In the evening the baraat sets off with music and dancing, the groom is welcomed at the gate, and the rites carry on late into the night. Dinner is served all evening.

The rites, one by one

  1. 11:00 AM

    Tilakotsav

Medha’s family puts a tilak on Akshay’s forehead and honours him with gifts. Lunch follows.

Medha’s family welcomes Akshay and marks his forehead with a tilak of kumkum and rice, a sign that he is accepted and honoured. Gifts are exchanged, and both families sit down to lunch together.

  2. Baraat Nikasi

The groom sets off with family and friends, with music and dancing all the way to the gate.

Akshay rides out on a decorated mare with the sehra over his face, the band in front and the baraatis dancing behind. At the gate, Medha’s family welcomes him with aarti and garlands. The exact time depends on the muhurat and will be shared on the day.

  3. Wedding Ceremonies

The jaimala, the kanyadaan and the seven pheras around the sacred fire. Dinner is served all evening.

Akshay and Medha exchange garlands at the jaimala. Under the mandap, the kanyadaan is performed, the sacred fire is lit, and they take seven pheras around it, each one a promise. With sindoor and the mangalsutra, they are married. The rites go on late, so dinner is served from the evening onwards.
